Obscure musician DIVERSA is as original as name

Music has shifted.

Once only possible with physical instruments, the craft surged through technological advancements — guitar pedals, analog synthesizers, intentionally-broken sound cards — and now lives amid computer screens and exhausted teenagers at 2:00 AM.

Available to anyone with ambition and a computer, the electronic music industry has erupted with sleepless high schoolers and tired adults. DIVERSA is a product of that.

DIVERSA, a little-known electronic artist, practices ever-distinguishable sound design which merges aggressive hip-hop-inspired ambience in some tracks but flaunts otherworldly melodies and enlightening messages in others. Unashamed experimentality inspires all of his compositions, creating his prized original atmospheres.

I played sophomore Devin Coviello “Please don’t hurt yourself.” Although no lyrics were present to verbally discourage self-destruction, the title and song were fitting to him.

“I think [the title] kinda makes sense,” Coviello said. “If you wanted to [hurt yourself], it would calm you down.”

Nick Cline, another sophomore, reviewed “Unlike ft. Mothica,” a wildly unique track. “It kinda sounds like … a mix of jazz and dubstep,” Cline said. “It sounds like something that would be played in a commercial for speakers.”

I couldn’t have agreed more. “Unlike ft. Mothica” is an almost dissettling track, heaving thick synthesizers and dense leads with ethereal vocal samples.

Chemistry and marine biology teacher Mrs. Missy Schick listened to “Trigger Happy,” one of DIVERSA’s more energized tracks.

“[My son] makes this type of music all the time,” Mrs. Schick said. After the song ended, she noted, “It had a nice beat and a nice melody. I’m thankful it wasn’t rap. I don’t like rap.”

With his popular blend of hostile and delicate sound, DIVERSA captivates all. Few artists seem to care about their projects, and even fewer seem to care about their fans — but DIVERSA creates songs selected for every individual.

Check out his music here! All the songs mentioned here are included, along with some untold favorites of mine. Occasional releases (not in this list!) are explicit, so take caution.
