CAHS students share their thoughts on bucket lists

“I want to skydive, go to Australia, go to Disney World… stuff like that,” said junior Shyanne Lawson. These are just some examples of the things that make up the unique bucket lists of CAHS students.

A bucket list is a compilation of goals one wishes to accomplish before they die. The items on the list could be as ambitious as climbing Mount Everest or traveling to every continent, or they could just be simple desires, such as getting an A in math or learning to drive.

Junior Christian Wells believes they are a good way to create a “life worth living.”

“I want to visit another continent by myself, meet one player from the Kansas City Royals and the San Diego Padres baseball team, and climb the Rocky Mountains,” Wells said.

The term “bucket list” stems from the phrase “to kick the bucket” meaning “to die.” Although its true origin is debatable, the term made its way into mainstream culture after the movie “The Bucket List” was released in 2007. The movie involves two characters (played by Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson) dying of cancer who decide to compile and complete a list of things they want to accomplish before they “kick the bucket.”

Some people think bucket lists aren’t a good idea, whereas others think it’s healthy to have aspirations, as long as you don’t put too much pressure on yourself to accomplish them.

Despite having one of his own, sophomore MacIntyre Stary doesn’t agree with the idea of taking bucket lists too seriously. “You should just live life instead of trying to do all of this stuff you wrote down when you were ten,” he said.

“It’s good to have goals, but you don’t have to give 100% of yourself to reach that goal.” junior Lily Garcia said. “You shouldn’t feel like you failed if you haven’t done it, because you’ve lived a life. A really good life.”
