On Tuesday, Oct. 6, the CAHS girls junior varsity volleyball team played a match against the Guajome Park Academy Frogs.  The match was exciting, especially for fans of the Caimans. The score of the first game ended at 25-11. The second game ended with a score of 25-10. This match played for the best of three games—with Classical winning the first two, a final round was not needed.

Before the first game, each team formed a huddle to pump themselves up. The Caimans gathered in a circle, each with one foot in the center, while the Frogs sat on their knees and hit the ground.

Within the first five minutes of the first game the Caimans scored the first point. Quickly the Caimans gathered six points, with the Frogs still at zero. The Frogs did not score their first point until seven minutes into the game.

The game was fast-paced. Overhand serves powered into the other side. Since the ball could be touched three times on each side, there was usually a bump (which is when the ball is too low to set or spike), set and spike (which is to hit the ball with one hand as hard as you can), while the other team tried to block. Bodies were always flying, diving and jumping. “I had seen them play in a tournament before and they seemed kinda good,” freshman Emma Doherty said. “But once they started warming up, I saw that they weren’t as strong as I had seen them and so I thought that, ‘hey we might be able to beat them,’”

The energy of the Caimans was never more pronounced than when chants erupted from their own bench. The chants from the bench mates helped pump up the girls on the court with explosions of screams when the girls on the court would score. The most famous chant involved players repeating, “We want another one, just like the other one.” When a player scored a spectacular point, the bench girls would get down on their bellies and do an imitation of Superman. “I think we are doing really well,” Doherty said. “Our overall score so far is 19 wins to four losses, so that’s really good right now.”

After the match was over, both teams showed good sportsmanship by high-fiving each other’s hands and congratulating each other.
