Disney has plans for live-action movies—and not just a few of them
For the past few years, Disney has decided to make classic old Disney films into live-action movies. Some people love that
Disney is making these new and improved movies, but others are offended that Disney could change these classic films. “I’m excited. Some of that excitement is laced with a little bit of apprehension. Mostly excited, the apprehension just comes from fear that the classic movie that I grew up on and loved in the 90’s/early 2000’s might be ruined,” senior AR Morel said.
Three that have been released in the past few years have been Maleficent, Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. With Cinderella, many people loved the new dress, hair and shoes, but others did not like that most of the songs were taken out of the movie. Maleficent, however, was a different matter, because most people either loved the movie or thought it was just okay. Then there was Alice in Wonderland, which is about grown up Alice going back to Wonderland to kill the Jabberwok. Most people did like this movie but there were others who thought that Tim Burton made this once happy and colorful world too creepy.
“I liked Maleficent, Cinderella was OK, and I didn’t like Alice in Wonderland. It was weird,” sophomore Damaris Eddy said. But despite viewers’ mixed thoughts, the hare-raising screenplay did get good enough reviews to achieve a sequel. On May 16, 2016, Alice Through the Looking Glass will be released in theaters.
There are also 11 other Disney live-action films that are coming out in the years to come. One is Aladdin, but this isn’t going to be the same Aladdin that we all know and love. This carpet-crowned movie will resemble the perspective change of
Maleficent, following the view point of the Genie. The movie is planned to be more of a prequel to the story of Aladdin, showing what the Genie did before he met his savior.
The Jungle Book is coming out this year on April 15, 2016. This film is casted with very famous actors and actresses such as Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Christopher Walken and so much more. From watching the trailers, nothing major about the story of the animated Jungle Book seems to be changing, but there may be a bit more action than the original film. Also, the movie will not be musical, but there will likely be enough music to satisfy people who grew up with animated movie. Meaning that, like Cinderella, it will have a few songs but not all.
This next movie is of the girl more than worth fighting for, Mulan. Nothing has been said about what is going to happen with Mulan, but it will be based on the script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. These two girls have known each other since high school, and also rewrote a script for Amazon studios. “…[Mulan] was always my favorite Disney Princess and here’s why. Because she was a real woman, and that movie actually made me look her up and research about her. And as a real woman she wasn’t ever caught as a woman. But she went in for her little brother since he was too young, and they were going to send him anyway, and she like, ‘Um no, I’m going to protect my brother,’” Morel said.
Soon to fly into theaters is the cute elephant we all know: Dumbo. This movie is said to be like the 1941 film of Dumbo, and Tim
Burton has announced that he will be directing this movie.
Busy bees are getting ready to work on this next film, Winnie the Pooh. The live-action of Winnie the Pooh will actually not be about everyone’s favorite cuddly bear, instead focusing on the grown-up Christopher Robin. The film will be written by Alex Ross who just wrote and directed the Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss vehicle “Listen up Philip.”
Pinocchio is also said to hit the screen, which is going to be written by Director Paul Thomas Anderson. Anderson is not attached to directing Pinocchio yet, but there is an actor ready for this story to come to life. Robert Downey Jr. will be starring as Geppetto, and producing the movie along with his wife Susan.
The amazing Fantasia is going to be remade as well, but it will not be quite like the show we know. The movie will be based on one of the shorts from the movie. This short is called “Night on Bald Mountain,” a spooky segment about a terrifying creature raising spirits from the dead. The film will be written by the duo Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
This feisty fairy has already gotten her own movie, but now will have a live-action film as well. Tinkerbell will be played by Reese Witherspoon, and although details on the show have not been released, we do know that Victoria Strouse will be writing the movie. She has also written Finding Nemo’s sequel Finding Dory.
These two brothers will finally get their own movie after all these years. Chip ‘n’ Dale’s movie will be much like the Smurfs movie—in other words, they will still be animated, but thrown into a live-action world.
After all these princess movies, Prince Charming is also finally getting a movie of his own. It is unclear if the prince will be one of the classic princes or a new prince with a new princess. The script is written by Matt Fogel and being produced by David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Tripp Vinson.
Last but certainly not least is the tale as old as time, Beauty and the Beast. Disney unveiled that they will be remaking the carnivorous tale in April of 2015. Since then they have been hard at work on this film. Beauty and Beast is said to be musical like the classic animated movie. It includes Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Ian McKellan and so much more that will be a part of this amazing cast. “Beauty and the Beast is going to be amazing, I hope. It’s got Emma Watson in it,” Eddy said. The release date will not be until March 17, 2017.
With so many movies coming out, what will be next?
