ESCONDIDO-On Friday October 24th, our varsity football team won 22-21 against the visiting Army Navy Academy team.

It was a game unlike most: a  last minute victory along with  a sea of people decked out in pink attire provided a unique environment. Numerous fans of the caimans arrived to the game dressed in pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “My family has had a history of breast cancer so it’s a reason to support [this event],” said sophomore Seth Wolfe.

Much of the crowd participated in this to show their support, as well as to show their school spirit. Throughout most of the game,  the fans cheered and chanted for the team. “Tanner [Mizel] says he can hear me when I yell so I like to come and go all out,” said alumni, Breanna Kirklen.

“We had a great opening drive,” coach Jon Goodman said. There were a couple of fumbles and turnovers that hurt the team during the first half, but the team was able to make a comeback later on. “In football games there’s tons of adversity, so seeing the boys respond to the adversity was really fun to watch,” said coach Goodman.

According to Coach Sherlock, the team was struggling to move the ball, and with three and a half minutes left on the clock he thought that the game might result in a loss. The team was down 19-21 and stopped short of the goal line, but a penalty pushed them back to 17 yards out. “It’s one of those game that’s so close that it comes down to one team executing and one team coming up short,” said Sherlock.

With about forty seconds left on the clock, senior kicker Brendan Gahler successfully kicked the game winning field goal. “I was overwhelmed with joy,” said Gahler.

Junior  defensive nose-guard Noah Farmer said, “It was hard. We probably could have done better during the first half, but we came back really strong in the second half.”
