A fatal shooting occurred on the campus of the University of South Carolina on Thursday afternoon. The shooting was reported as a murder-suicide involving two individuals.

The shooting began shortly after 1 p.m. EST, inside the public health building on campus. The campus police department responded to the sound of gunfire and placed the health building on lockdown.

An alert was issued around 1:15 p.m. over the school’s emergency response system, reporting that shots had been fired inside the building. Following the alert, the entire campus was placed under lockdown.

Police closed off the building and the streets that surrounded it. By then, the fire department and some police from the Columbia department had responded the the alert.

Students who were inside the building began posting updates and photos to social media while on lockdown. While officials did not know where the shooting took place, several students insisted that the shooting occurred in a room on the third floor.

At 2:30 p.m., the university sent out an all-clear message, assuring the building was secured.

“From every indication that we have seen so far it appears to be a very isolated incident,” said Thom Berry of South Carolina’s State Law Enforcement Division. “The shootings happened very quickly.”

It was later reported that the victim was 45-year-old Raja Fayad, a physiology professor at the university. The identity of the shooter has not yet been released. It was said that there was an alleged relationship between Fayan and the shooter.

University President Harris Pastides sent a message to all students, calling the day a tragedy, thanked the police for their quick efforts and sent his prayers to those who were affected.
