The CAHS dance team performs at pep rallies, sporting events, competitions in Los Angeles, as well as many other events. “We like to try and get the school as spirited as possible,” said Sarah Smudz.

For those who prefer to express themselves through actions rather than words, dancing can be a great outlet. “A lot of the time I have trouble verbally conveying the way I feel about things, and then I can kind of tell someone that through the way I move,” said junior Ally Rose.

Rose began dancing after she joined Classical Academy High’s dance team freshman year. She was originally inspired to dance due to her love of music. “I relate to [music] very well,” Rose said. “I think I just kind of grooved to songs, and my mom was like, ‘you should try that!’”

However, the main thing that motivates her to continue dancing is the feeling it gives her. “It’s like a little dancer high,” Rose said.

Junior Shyanne Lawson said that she has been really enjoying her first year on the team. She stated that the greatest part of joining the dance team is all of the new friends she has acquired. “The choreography is always really fun, but being with girls I normally wouldn’t have socialized with, that was really cool.”

Junior Rebecca Rossi thinks that the best part of dancing is being on stage. “You don’t really think. It’s all kind of like adrenaline,” said Rossi. “I like being in the moment of dancing, where you don’t have to think, you just do it.”

“I immediately loved Ms. D and Keala DeAngelo, and I just felt a connection. And then I met all the other girls on the team and immediately loved them,” said junior Sarah Smudz, whose passion for dance started after taking her first Irish dancing class at the age of seven.

Whether it’s the feeling the music gives them, the adrenaline rush of performing onstage, or the support of their fellow dancers, every dance team member has a different reason for dancing.

“I like it a lot,” said Rossi. “It’s definitely crazy, because there’s a whole bunch of events we need to go to and stuff, and it’s also crazy being with a ton of crazy girls, but it’s super fun, and I think we all get along really well, and we’re basically all like a big family.”
